Orongo Ceremonial Village (Easter Island)

Orongo Birdman Ceremonial Village which birdman race for deciding a paramount chief had been held, was the sacred site in Easter Island.

Orongo is located on the ridge of Rano Kau volcano (altitude 324m) in southwest of Easter Island.

Birdman race is the ceremony that men of island swim to the offshore islet and bring back an egg of seabird.

The chief of the tribe of birdman race winner is chosen to birdman and he rules the island for a year.

Competitors of birdman race descend the 300m formidable cliff and swim the ocean up to the islet  'Motu Nui' 2km away.
